From Harm to Hope

About Women Initiative for Society Empowerment

WISE was established on 10 June 2010 by Somali women and professionals who sought to address the humanitarian and development challenges facing Somali communities — with women and girls at the center of the work.

FOUNDED 10 JUNE 2010

Our Story

Somalia has experienced prolonged conflict, displacement and humanitarian crises that have affected communities for decades — challenges that have particularly affected women, children, persons with disabilities, displaced populations and other vulnerable groups.

WISE was established in response, bringing together the ideas, skills and commitment of Somali women and professionals to support community development, humanitarian assistance and empowerment.

The organization continues to work with communities to strengthen their capacity, improve access to essential services, promote rights and create opportunities for sustainable livelihoods.

-GENDER FOCUS

Women and girls at the center

WISE recognizes that crises can disproportionately affect women and girls and can increase existing inequalities and vulnerabilities. Our gender-focused approach ensures their specific needs, strengths and aspirations are considered throughout relief, recovery and development.

This includes supporting women’s participation, protection, livelihoods, access to services, leadership and decision-making.
